Deadpool
I listen to a few podcasts about films and general geek
stuff (The Weekly Planet & Keeping It Reel) and they have been hyped about
the Dead Pool film for some time, albeit with trepidation over the R-Rated
certification and the 4th wall breaking hero.
I don’t know much about the titular character, only from the
awful portrayal in Wolverine Origins (but that is just a terrible film) and the
occasional appearance in Marvel computer games, but I was looking forward to
this based on the trailers and the advertising campaigns
When Wade Wilson’s life is seemingly going to plan, he finds
out that he has cancer of pretty much every major organ. He is approached by a mysterious organisation
who offers him the potential of becoming a super hero, as long as the suit is
not green or animated. Thus, Deadpool
is created.
Done in a nonlinear fashion, Deadpool merges the origin
story with a revenge plot with multiple in-universe jokes and references. I pretty much laughed throughout, there were
a couple of lulls in laughs but generally the whole film entertained from start
to finish. The sub characters of
MegaSonic Teenage Warhead, Colossus, Dopinder and Blind Al compliment Deadpools
crazy humour perfectly. The bad guy is
not that interesting, but in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and Televisual)
there has only been a handful of decent foes (Killgrave being my favourite so
far – Jessica Jones)
I must say, that the post credit scene is by far the
greatest of Marvels final closing moments, referencing my original fourth wall
breaking John Hughes hero was a perfect finish for me with addition of the
musical hit
